Annascaul River Walk

You can’t say you’ve been in Annascaul until you’ve visited the lake that’s nestled in the mountains overlooking the valley.

Recently built as a community project this beautiful walk brings you along the river bank and it is suitable for all, and especially great for a family stroll as it is fenced off and fairly flat all the way. You will cross over a stile which will bring you into an enchanting little forest said to be the home of fairies or sióga. If you continue on you will come to a road and take the turn to the left and it will bring you up to Annascaul Lake and a loop back around to the village past Tom Crean’s grave.

Our Train Carriage is located behind the South Pole Inn in Annascaul Village. Across from here, you can follow the Annagap road where you come to a sign post for the Lake Walk.

The walk is not too taxing with much of it flat ground. The scenery is beautiful along the long road, and then more visual ‘close-up’ treats are displayed when you turn at the crossroads, as the road is dotted with charming old farm buildings and traditional houses. After the lake gate, the road dips and winds down to the lake car park and continues along the foot of the mountain to your left.
